BILL DEBLASIO: WE WILL IGNORE TRUMP’S FEDERAL IMMIGRATION LAWS

When you’re the Mayor of the largest city in the United States, your words can hold a substantial amount of weight. As such, New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio’s open defiance of potential federal immigration laws has gained a ton of traction, but it’s starting to look like it’s not just a bunch of hot air. As Breitbart shares, he’s making it pretty clear that he’ll ignore any immigration laws that may impact his fair city.

DeBlasio sat down for a recent interview to articulate his point.

“The NYPD will not participate as immigration enforcement agents because we have, for decades, built a close working relationship with immigrant communities. Our police force is not going to be out there knocking on people’s door and it is not going to share information about people’s documentation status with the federal authorities,” he said.

In essence, DeBlasio is saying that he doesn’t like the proposed laws, and he won’t instruct the city’s police department to enforce them. His stance could very well result in his city being hit in the pocketbook by having federal funding pulled, but he has an answer for that one as well.

“They claim they want to force us to change our ways, and their penalty is going to take away anti-terrorism funding that protects the biggest city in America and the number one terror target, I think that will end up being untenable and unacceptable. But in the first instance, nothing has been done to remove our funding so far, and if there ever were an attempt, we would immediately go to court to stop it,” DeBlasio said.

While DeBlasio is certainly entitled to his personal opinion, it is beyond ludicrous to see him digging his feet in the ground on this. Laws are enacted for a reason, and to have so-called leaders running around and lighting their hair on fire to point out that they don’t like them does little to advance the overall debate. What’s more, DeBlasio is essentially saying that it’s ok to disregard a law that you may not personally agree with.

He’s up for re-election this year, so it’ll be interesting to see if his words come back to haunt him.
